I lived in an English picture postcard market town that slowly
expanded with the motor industry .It expanded fuelled by worker pouring in from
London .It was a picture of a wealthy city full of glass and marble floors .
20years later as I walk through the
litter strewn streets I wonder whether I should pack up and leave
town or stay and try and do something .I live in one of the better areas but
slowly the area has become tired and dangerous .I often think about the big American
cities Where the factories closed down .The infrastructure collapse the little
shops and businesses that service the working families all went bankrupt.
The big money left first then the middle classes then the
working guys could not sell their houses for a high enough price to get
somewhere else
Or that bloke in Argentina that writes about the meltdown
who says the ones who leave first get the best deals
As I watch the newspapers blow by I wonder is this the start
of something bigger
